Medical staff saves baby’s life after pregnant woman fatally shot at Phoenix motel

A pregnant woman died of what police believe was a self-inflicted gunshot wound at a Phoenix motel Monday morning, but her baby survived and is in stable condition, authorities said.

The Phoenix Fire Department responded to a medical call involving a pregnant woman near 24th Drive and Thomas Road, just east of Interstate 17, around 6 a.m., according to the Phoenix Police Department.

While taking the woman to a hospital, firefighters saw she’d been shot. She was pronounced dead at the hospital.

Evidence suggested the gunshot injury was self-inflicted. The medical examiner will make the final determination on the cause of death.

Medical staff were able to save the baby’s life, police said. The baby remains hospitalized in stable condition as of around 6:30 p.m. Monday.

During the investigation, officers learned additional children were present in the motel room. The Department of Child Safety was contacted to care for them.
