EDP Renewables, SRP complete major Arizona battery storage project

EDP Renewables North America and Salt River Project (SRP) celebrated the completion of the Flatland Energy Storage project, a new 200-megawatt battery system designed to bolster grid reliability in central Arizona.
The facility, located in Coolidge, has a capacity of 800 megawatt-hours and can power the equivalent of 44,500 homes.
It marks the largest battery energy storage system that EDP has ever built.
Project officials said the facility will help meet growing energy demand and ensure the grid can handle peak consumption periods.
“Energy storage plays a critical role in maintaining a reliable and resilient electric grid, especially as demand continues to grow,” EDP CEO Sandhya Ganapathy said in a statement. “Projects like Flatland Energy Storage ensure power is available when it’s needed most.”
The project is expected to generate more than $20 million in local and regional economic impact over its lifetime, including $19.2 million in revenue dedicated to local public services and infrastructure.
