Transportation officials are warning Phoenix-area drivers to plan ahead for freeway road work and traffic restrictions this weekend.
Closures or lane restrictions are scheduled on Interstate 10, State Route 51, Loop 101, Loop 202 and Loop 303 from Friday night through Monday morning, according to the Arizona Department of Transportation Weekend Freeway Travel Advisory for May 15-18.
Road work planned on SR 51 in Phoenix
Southbound SR 51 will be closed between Northern Avenue and Highland Avenue, south of Camelback Road, from 9 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Monday for pavement improvements.
Drivers can consider southbound Interstate 17 as an alternate freeway route.
Those exiting southbound SR 51 at Northern Avenue can use southbound 16th Street to eastbound Highland Avenue or Indian School Road to get back to the freeway.
Loop 101 closure scheduled in West Valley
Southbound Loop 101, also known as the Agua Fria Freeway, will be closed between Indian School Road and Interstate 10 in the West Valley from 9 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Monday for the start of the Loop 101 and I-10 interchange improvement project.
Southbound Loop 101 on-ramps at Cardinals Way and Camelback Road also will be closed. Drivers can use southbound 91st Avenue or 99th Avenue to reach I-10.
Meanwhile the Pima Freeway section of Loop 101 will be narrowed to two lanes in both directions between Shea Boulevard and Princess Drive from 10 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Monday so crews can fix the pavement.
ADOT said southbound Loop 101 on- and off-ramps in that area will close at times.
