‘Wall of dust’ rolls through East Valley with high wind speeds

PHOENIX — A dust storm rolled through the southeastern parts of the Valley on Sunday night, warranting a dust advisory for parts of Maricopa and Pinal counties.

According to the advisory, a “wall of dust” was seen around 8:55 p.m., traveling 25 mph further east from southwest of South Mountain Park to near Sun Lakes and near San Tan Valley.

The advisory, with areas affected including Mesa, Chandler, Gilbert, Casa Grande, Apache Junction, Queen Creek and others, was issued through 9:45 p.m.

There was less than two miles of visibility at points through the dust, as wind speeds exceeded 40 mph.

Travel was deemed “hazardous” on the following stretches of Valley highways, where multiple locations had debris reported as well:

• Interstate 10 between mile markers 163-198
• Interstate 8 between mile markers 173-177
• US 60 between mile markers 209-213

Drivers in the area were advised to pull off the road when necessary, with lights turned off and the foot kept off the brake.
