PHOENIX – Two stretches of metro Phoenix freeway and associated ramps will be closed for improvement projects this weekend.
Roadwork on State Route 51 and the Loop 101 Agua Fria Freeway will have a significant impact on traffic, according to the Arizona Department of Transportation Weekend Freeway Travel Advisory for March 27-30.
In central Phoenix, southbound SR 51 will be closed from Glendale Avenue to Indian School Road from 9 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Monday for an ongoing pavement improvement project.

The southbound SR 51 on-ramp at Northern Avenue, the entrance before the closure, will also be out of commission.
ADOT is advising motorists to take Interstate 17 as a detour to downtown Phoenix and Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport or use southbound 16th Street, which is just east of SR 51, to bypass the closure area.
What is this weekend’s other metro Phoenix freeway closure?
Further north, westbound Loop 101 will be closed from I-17 to 51st Avenue from 10 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Monday for a long-term widening project.
The ramps from both directions of I-17 to westbound Loop 101 will be closed, too, as will the westbound Loop 101 on-ramps at Seventh Street and Seventh Avenue.
In a related restriction, northbound I-17 will be limited to two lanes from Loop 101 to Pinnacle Peak Road from 9 p.m. Friday to 5 p.m. Sunday.
Drivers should consider alternative routes such as Bell Road or Union Hills Drive while westbound Loop 101 is closed, ADOT said.
Watch out for roadwork in downtown Phoenix, Gilbert
There are two other areas where metro Phoenix freeway projects will affect traffic this weekend.
In downtown Phoenix, the ramp from southbound Seventh Street to westbound I-10 will be closed from 10 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Monday for paving work.
In Gilbert, Lindsay Road will be closed in both directions at the Loop 202 Santan Freeway from 10 p.m. Friday to 2 p.m. Saturday for a major East Valley widening project.
