Scattered showers hit the Valley before temperatures expected to pick back up

PHOENIX — Scattered showers were sweeping over parts of the Valley as some motorists made their way home on Monday evening.

The National Weather Service’s radar for Phoenix showed the rain making its way into parts of the East and West Valley around 5:15 p.m.

NWS Phoenix said that scattered showers and thunderstorms were beginning to cover the Phoenix metro area around 6:10 p.m., specifically in the southeast Valley. It advised residents to expect gusty winds, heavy downpours and possible hail.

The weather authority also issued thunderstorm warnings for Globe, Miami and Claypool due to the weather.

Sean Benedict, a meteorologist with NWS Phoenix, told KTAR News 92.3 FM on Monday morning that areas hit by thunderstorms could see winds up to 35 mph.

NWS said the first round of storms brought 0.05 inches of rain to Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport, which the weather authority uses for the city’s official readings. It added that more rain could possibly hit the Valley before midnight.

How much rain has the Valley seen from the scattered showers so far?

Maricopa County’s Rainfall Interactive Data Map showed the weather mostly affecting the East Valley and Phoenix as there was no measurable rainfall in the West Valley by 9 p.m.

Areas of central Phoenix were showered with anywhere from 0.04 to 0.16 inches of rain.

Meanwhile, Paradise Valley and Chandler were drizzled with 0.04 inches, Mesa got 0.08 inches, Queen Creek collected 0.12 inches and Gilbert received 0.16 inches of rain.

Following the rain, Phoenix is expected to have a potentially “historic” heat wave with a stretch of highs in the lower to mid-90s starting Thursday.
