Father arrested in connection with infant’s September 2025 death in south Phoenix

A father was arrested Thursday in connection with the death of his infant son in September 2025 in south Phoenix, authorities said.

PHOENIX — A father was arrested Thursday in connection with the death of his infant son in September 2025 in south Phoenix, authorities said.

The Phoenix Police Department identified the man taken into custody as 26-year-old Domingo Herrera Espinoza.

Herrera Espinoza was booked into jail on multiple charges, including first-degree murder, child abuse and probation violation. He is being held on a more than $1 million bond.

What led to the father’s arrest for the infant’s death in south Phoenix?

On Aug. 31, 2025, officers responded to the area of 19th Drive and Chipman Road after reports of an unresponsive child around 8:52 p.m.

When police and the Phoenix Fire Department arrived at the scene, they found the boy in critical condition and took him to a nearby hospital, authorities said.

Detectives interviewed the family — including Herrera Espinoza — and determined that the father was watching his son at the time of the incident, police said.

The infant died on Sept. 3, 2025, according to authorities.

The Maricopa County Medical Examiner’s Office ruled the infant’s death a homicide on Feb. 25.
