WATCH: President Donald Trump gives 2026 State of the Union speech

PHOENIX — President Donald Trump gave this year’s State of the Union speech on Tuesday night.

It was a consequential moment of his presidency, as the Supreme Court recently declared that his sweeping tariffs were illegal.

KTAR News 92.3 FM aired the State of the Union address with coverage of the Democratic response afterwards. There will also be reactions from various state leaders and political experts on Wednesday morning.

Trump briefly previewed the topics he might address during a luncheon with reporters held a few hours before his speech.

ABC News Chief Washington Correspondent Jonathan Karl said Trump is focused on the Iran deal and the economy. The president also plans to call for tax cuts and to tell Americans that the next three years will be the strongest economic period in U.S. history.

Several Arizona leaders won’t attend Trump’s 2026 State of the Union

However, most of Arizona’s Congressional Democrats will be skipping Trump’s address. U.S. Sen. Ruben Gallego has said he’ll be off doing “more productive” things, while Reps. Yassamin Ansari and Adelita Grijalva said they are opting out.

Gallego and Ansari instead spoke at a counterprogramming event called the “People’s State of the Union.”

The one Democratic member of Congress who plans to attend says he’s going as an act of defiance: U.S. Sen. Mark Kelly.

The former astronaut was rocketed into the national spotlight after Trump’s called him and other Democrats who took part in a video urging servicemembers not to obey illegal orders “traitors.”

The U.S. Department of Justice recently failed to indict Kelly in court.

Meanwhile, Pete Hegseth, the leader of the U.S. Department of Defense, has pushed to demote him — despite the fact that Kelly retired from the Navy with the rank of captain. However, a judge temporarily blocked the Pentagon from punishing Kelly.

“Two weeks ago, Donald Trump tried to have me arrested for something I said that he didn’t like,” Kelly said in a statement. “I’m going to be in that room because he can’t intimidate me or stop me from doing my job — standing up for Arizona and the Constitution.”
