Construction company buys Tempe hotel to use as employee development center

PHOENIX — McCarthy Building Companies, an employee-owned company, recently purchased a Tempe hotel to use as an employee development center.

According to a Friday announcement, the construction company bought the DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel, located at the corner of Priest Drive and Broadway Road.

The new center will be used for employee learning, leadership and development. It is expected to bring thousands of McCarthy employees from around the country to Tempe for multi-day learning and development programs as well as team-building trips.

“The purchase of our new Center for Learning and Development marks another major investment in our people, performance and culture, and it underscores our long-term commitment to developing the next generation of builders and leaders,” McCarthy CEO Ray Sedey said. “By creating a dedicated campus for specialized training, connection and leadership development, we’re positioning our partners — and therefore our clients — for long-term success.”

The construction company will preserve the former hotel’s distinctive architectural character and landscape. However, it plans to refresh and modernize the aesthetics of the building.

The Tempe learning and development center will expand McCarthy’s presence in the Grand Canyon State, joining its Innovation and Craft Workforce Center in Chandler and Southwest Regional Headquarters in Phoenix.

The Chandler center focuses on providing discipline-specific training, hands-on skills development and prefabrication capabilities to craft professionals and trade partners.

“We have known and respected McCarthy’s work for decades and we are so proud that they chose Tempe as the location for their new Center for Learning and Development,” Tempe Mayor Corey Woods said. “Their significant investment in restoring and improving this property is appreciated, and our city looks forward to hosting the thousands of McCarthy construction professionals who will be visiting each year.”

McCarthy has brought in Deloitte to consult on the center and is partnering with Pyramid Global Hospitality to manage and operate the property.

Planning and construction improvement for the center are expected to take place over the next 18 to 24 months. There will be on-site employment opportunities once it opens.
