Man arrested, hospitalized after domestic violence incident leads to barricade situation

PHOENIX — A man was arrested after a domestic violence incident involving his mother escalated to a barricade situation in Mesa, authorities said Saturday.

Police first responded to the mother’s home near University Drive and 25th Street on Friday shortly after 10 p.m. for reports that her 25-year-old son allegedly assaulted her and took her vehicle as he was leaving the scene.

The vehicle was spotted Saturday around 7:30 a.m. near Stapley Drive and Main Street, about two miles away from the residence.

The man fled an attempted traffic stop and ended up back at the mother’s home shortly after. She safely exited the home and informed police her son was inside alone.

A Mesa SWAT team was called to the home, and the man came out after several hours of negotiations, according to the Mesa Police Department.

Police used bean bag and pellet rounds when the man did not comply with commands, instead throwing rocks toward officers at one point. He was taken to a hospital for minor injuries once in custody.

Police did not identify either family member involved.
