Arizona man and his 10-year-old son face charges after firearm found at Casa Grande school

PHOENIX — A 10-year-old student has been arrested for allegedly bringing a firearm onto a school campus on Thursday, according to the Casa Grande Police Department.

Police said the student’s father, 35‑year‑old Matthew Ozorkiewicz, was aware that his child verbally threatened another student prior to bringing the gun to Legacy Traditional School near Trekell and Kortsen roads.

Ozorkiewicz was arrested and charged with endangerment because he allegedly allowed his son to return to school despite threats made the day before and failed to properly secure a firearm, giving the juvenile access to the weapon, police said.

The 10-year-old is facing charges of possessing a firearm by a minor, threats, disruption of an educational institution and misconduct involving weapons.

How police heard about student, firearm incident at Legacy Traditional School

Police heard about the incident after a student discovered the firearm on a sports field.

The student reported the firearm — later identified as a .22‑caliber handgun — to a staff member, who then notified the school safety officer, a police officer assigned to the school.

Police officers then searched the campus for additional weapons or threats, during which the school was placed on a temporary hold status as a precaution.

The investigation is ongoing.
