PHOENIX — Big changes are coming to the intersection where US 60/Grand Avenue meets 35th Avenue and Indian School Road in Phoenix.
The Grand-35 Project will reconstruct the intersection to help traffic flow more smoothly, cut down on crashes and reduce conflicts between vehicles and trains, according to the Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT).
The overall purpose of the Grand-35 Project is to ensure that both 35th Avenue and Indian School Road pass over Grand Avenue and the BNSF Railway, so traffic on the respective roads can flow freely.
What changes will Grand Avenue intersection project bring?
This plan requires:
- Shifting 35th Avenue to the west and elevating it to form a new intersection with Indian School Road.
- Shifting Indian School Road north and elevating it to meet the new alignment of 35th Avenue.
- Creating an elevated, signalized intersection at 35th Avenue and Indian School Road.
- Providing three lanes in each direction on Indian School Road.
- Providing three lanes in each direction on Grand Avenue, which would remain at-grade.
- Extending Glenrosa Avenue to the west to create a new connector road that would restore connectivity between 35th and Grand avenues.
- Realigning Clarendon Avenue west of 35th Avenue to connect to Clarendon Avenue east of 35th Avenue and eliminating the existing offset intersection at 35th Avenue.
ADOT said 35th Avenue will maintain two southbound lanes and three northbound lanes.
Furthermore, the Grand-35 Project would extend 33rd Avenue north of Indian School Road. A new east-to-west local road would extend from 33rd Avenue to 35th Avenue, while 33rd Drive would connect to the new east-west local road, ADOT said.
The public can learn more about the design plans and construction phasing on Jan. 22.
Where will Grand-35 Project meeting be held?
An in-person project meeting will take place at Alhambra High School, which is near Camelback Road and 37th Avenue, from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. ADOT, Phoenix officials and the Maricopa Association of Governments will host the presentation at the school’s cafeteria.
The online stream for the meeting will start at 6 p.m., beginning with the presentation and followed by a question‑and‑answer session at 6:30 p.m. Guests can watch the meeting on Zoom by using the meeting ID 941 5782 8758 or call to listen in by dialing 253-205-0468.
