PHOENIX — There wasn’t much suspense with this year’s Arizona secretary of state primary races until a late change in the Republican field.
As of Feb. 16, four candidates, including Democratic incumbent Adrian Fontes, had filed a statement of interest to become the state’s top elections official.
After announcing a run for a congressional seat back in October 2025, former Arizona Republican Party Chair Gina Swoboda switched to the secretary of state race in February, five months ahead of the primary elections.
Anybody running for Arizona secretary of state must file before circulating nominating petitions. Only the candidates who collect enough valid signatures will appear on the ballot for the July 21 primaries.
