Here’s how to stay safe if you ring in new year with fireworks in Arizona

PHOENIX — Many will ring in 2026 with explosive celebrations, so first responders want to make sure Valley revelers start the new year off on the right foot — and with the same number of fingers.

An estimated 14,700 people were injured by fireworks last year, according to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission. Scottsdale Fire Capt. Dave Folio said the dangerous mishaps typically are the result of alcohol and carelessness.

“They’re pointing them at each other, they’re holding them and/or they’re using illegal fireworks that they shouldn’t be using. That’s where people get in trouble, and then we get extremely busy,” Folio said.

What fireworks are illegal in Arizona?

In Arizona, fireworks that go up into the air or explode are illegal. However, Folio warned that legal ones like sparklers can burn at up to 2,000 degrees Fahrenheit.

Holiday season firework use is permitted through Jan. 4, 2026, a day after sales end.

Folio said people also need to be aware of where they’re setting them off.

“The desert is still extremely dry even though we’ve been getting moisture lately. There’s a lot of dead brush,” he said.

After celebrations, Folio said it’s important to soak used fireworks in a bucket overnight because many house fires start after improper disposal.
