Off-duty Arizona fire captain helps 2 people escape from burning home in Prescott

PHOENIX — An off-duty Arizona fire captain helped two people escape from their burning home earlier this month in Prescott, authorities said.

According to the Central Arizona Fire and Medical Authority (CAFMA), on Dec. 13, Captain and Health and Safety Officer Brody Fields was on the way to the gym with his wife, Taylor, when he saw a column of smoke in the area of Ponderosa Park Road.

Fields immediately took action and responded before firefighters. When he arrived, Fields found the fire had burned one side of a residence and there was light smoke inside the house.

The fire captain proceeded to search the house and helped a non-ambulatory occupant safely exit before going to help a second resident do the same.

In addition, Fields made sure to grab the residents’ personal items, including eye glasses, a cell phone and a safe.

He and his wife then began to use a garden hose to fight small pockets of fire around the wood-burning stove and keep the flames at bay.

When the on-duty firefighters arrived, Fields debriefed them on the status of the fire then allowed them to takeover.

“CAFMA commend Captain Fields for his quick thinking and commitment to the community, and recognizes the support of his wife in assisting at the scene,” CAFMA spokesperson Kathy Goodman said in a press release. “Together, their efforts reflect spirit and professionalism of first responders.”
