TSMC’s campus expansion plans are quickly clearing hurdles, though concerned residents have ramped up an opposition campaign as the project nears final approval.

The city of Phoenix’s Planning Commission voted during a Dec. 4 meeting to recommend approval for rezoning measures at the NorthPark master-planned community, where TSMC is planning to expand its campus south of its existing plant. Phoenix’s City Council will have the final say on officially rezoning the site at its Dec. 17 meeting.

The Planning Commission decision precedes another key step in the expansion process: on Jan. 7, TSMC is planning to scoop up a 902-acre property that’s part of the NorthPark site – which is currently state-owned land – during an auction with a whopping $197 million starting bid.

The opposition group, led by the Stetson Valley Homeowners Association, says the rezoning process is being fast-tracked and their worries around the environment and conflicts of interest aren’t being addressed.

At the Dec. 4 meeting, that group had new concerns around a newly introduced 17-page staff memo seeking various changes, including changing the percentage of acreage designated for industrial uses.
