Arizona fugitive wanted for multiple child sex crimes arrested in Ukraine

PHOENIX — An Arizona man who was wanted for multiple child sex crimes dating back to the 1980s was arrested by Ukrainian police Wednesday, authorities said.

Daniel George Brewster, 66, of Tucson, was arrested in Kyiv Oblast after more than 30 years on the run, according to the Tucson Police Department.

Brewster had been living in Ukraine under a false identity and used forged documents, according to authorities. Brewster’s arrest was coordinated by Ukrainian prosecutors, police, the FBI and Ukraine’s Ministry of Justice.

“The Tucson Police Department is sincerely grateful for the dedicated efforts of our federal and international partners in locating and apprehending this fugitive,” Tucson Police Chief Chad Kasmar said in a media advisory.

“We hope this arrest brings a measure of closure and justice to the survivors of these horrific crimes.”

Why was Arizona fugitive wanted after decades on the run?

Law enforcement was first alerted to Brewster in December 1991 after Tucson police began investigating reports of child sex crimes at a childcare center. During the investigation, police identified Brewster as a suspect, who was an employee at the daycare.

Upon investigation, authorities discovered incidents from 1984 to 1991 involving four children between the ages 4 and 9 who were under Brewster’s care.

Following the investigation, Brewster was arrested on Jan. 1, 1992, and booked into jail. After posting bail, Brewster failed to appear for the trial.

While he was on the run, legal action continued and he was found guilty in November 1992 on 15 counts of child sex abuse. A warrant was then issued for his arrest.
