PHOENIX — Arizona Attorney General Kris Mayes announced on Monday that the state will receive up to $108 million as part of a national multistate opioid settlement.
Purdue Pharma and its owners agreed to shell out $7.4 billion for their role in contributing to the country’s opioid epidemic, according to the Arizona Attorney’s General Office.
“I’m proud to secure another hundred million dollars to fight the opioid crisis in Arizona – and from some of the worst offenders, who worsened the opioid crisis across the country for their personal profit,” Mayes said in a statement.
“My office will never stop aggressively investigating and prosecuting the bad actors responsible for the opioid abuse epidemic and the scourge of fentanyl in our streets.”
Mayes, along with 55 attorneys general from eligible states and U.S. territories, signed on to the settlement.
The state has received more than $1.1 billion in opioid settlement funds from corporations responsible for the opioid epidemic.
Details on Pharma Purdue opioid settlement
Purdue Pharma was under the ownership of the Sackler family and is accused of intensely marketing opioid drugs for decades, according to prosecutors.
The multibillion-dollar settlement terminated the Sacklers’ ownership of Purdue while also making them ineligible to sell opioids in the U.S.
During the next 15 years, communities impacted by the crisis are set to receive settlement funds to support opioid addiction treatment, prevention and recovery.
The Purdue Pharma settlement is the country’s largest settlement to date in regard to holding people responsible for the epidemic.
The majority of the funds will be doled out within the first three years.
The Sackler family will pay out $1.5 billion and Purdue must payout around $900 million in the first payment, followed by two $500 million payments over 2 years and a $400 million payment after three years.
