Man dies after crashing into cement support pillar near Mesa Gateway Airport

A man died Monday morning after crashing into a cement support pillar in a single-vehicle collision near Mesa Gateway Airport, authorities said.

PHOENIX – A man died Monday morning after crashing into a cement support pillar in a single-vehicle collision near Mesa Gateway Airport, authorities said.

Lyman Cass was driving east on Ray Road a little before 6 a.m. when he slammed into a pillar supporting the State Route 24 (Gateway Freeway) overpass, just north of the airport, according to the Mesa Police Department.

The 58-year-old driver named Lyman Cass was pronounced dead at the scene.

Speed is thought to be a factor in the crash, police said.
