Work concludes this weekend on Interstate 17 pavement improvement project

PHOENIX — This weekend will see the final closure related to the six-mile project to improve southbound Interstate 17 in north Phoenix.

Due to the project, which is in its final stages, the Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) will close southbound I-17 between State Route 74 and Loop 303 from Friday at 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. on Monday.

The on-ramps at SR 74 and Dove Valley Road will also be closed.

ADOT recommends motorists use westbound SR 74 to southbound Lake Pleasant Parkway and eastbound Loop 303 to head back to I-17. Drivers are also advised to avoid using local streets east of I-17 that are not equipped for heavy traffic.

The project that was started in May 2024 involves diamond grinding of the freeway’s concrete pavement surface to remove the old layer of asphalt to create a surface that is smoother, safer and longer-lasting. Crews have recently worked to replace steel bridge deck joints that span the width of the freeway.
