Stretches of I-10, I-17 in Phoenix closed for improvement projects this weekend

PHOENIX – Sections of two Phoenix freeways will be closed because of improvement projects this weekend.

The roadwork will block traffic on westbound Interstate 10 and northbound Interstate 17, according to the Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) Weekend Freeway Travel Advisory for Feb. 21-24.

I-10 will be off-limits from the I-17 “Split” interchange near Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport to the I-17 “Stack” interchange near McDowell Road from 9 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Monday.

The closure, which includes the Deck Park Tunnel through downtown Phoenix, is for deck joint work as part of pavement improvements, ADOT said.

The southbound State Route 51 ramp to westbound I-10 will also be closed. Traffic from the westbound Loop 202 Red Mountain Freeway can enter westbound I-10 during the closure but must exit at Seventh Avenue.

Drivers are advised to take westbound I-17, which reconnects with I-10, to bypass the closure. In addition, McDowell Road and Van Buren Street are potential detours in the downtown area.

North Phoenix freeway also closed this weekend

Meanwhile, northbound I-17 will be closed from Happy Valley Road to Loop 303 in north Phoenix from 10 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Monday for a pavement improvement project.

The ramps from Deer Valley, Pinnacle Peak, Happy Valley and Jomax roads to northbound I-17 will also be blocked.

Local surface streets, which aren’t designed for heavy use, should not be used as a detour, ADOT said. Instead, northbound I-17 traffic should take westbound Happy Valley Road to northbound Lake Pleasant Parkway to eastbound Loop 303 to bypass the closure.

Interstate 10, I-17 aren’t the only construction zones

Drivers should also be on the lookout for the following freeway restrictions this weekend:

• Westbound I-10 will be reduced to two lanes from 48th Street to 24th Street in Phoenix from 7 p.m. Saturday to 4 a.m. Monday.
• The southbound SR 143 exit to University Drive, east of the airport, will be closed from 10 p.m. Saturday to 4 a.m. Monday.
• Two eastbound Loop 101 Agua Fria Freeway ramps in Glendale — the 59th Avenue on-ramp and the 51st Avenue off-ramp — will be closed from 11:30 p.m. Friday to 3 p.m. Saturday.
• The northbound Loop 101 Pima Freeway off-ramp at Raintree Drive in Scottsdale will be closed for about two months starting at 1 a.m. Monday.
