Latest Valley freeway advisory includes significant closures on I-10, I-17

PHOENIX — Once again, Valley motorists will have to manage this weekend without access to a long section of Interstate 10.

An 8-mile stretch of eastbound I-10 will be out of commission for Broadway Curve Improvement Project work for a second consecutive week, according to the Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) Weekend Freeway Travel Advisory for Feb. 7-10. (All times below are subject to change.)

The freeway will be closed from the “Mini-Stack” interchange at State Route 51 (Piestewa Freeway) in Phoenix to US 60 (Superstition Freeway) in Tempe from 10 p.m. Friday to 4 a.m. Monday, this time for bridge work, according to ADOT. Last week’s closure was for a traffic shift.

In addition to the mainline closure, the following ramps in the area will be off-limits:

• Southbound I-17 to eastbound I-10.
• Westbound Loop 202 Red Mountain Freeway to eastbound I-10.
• Southbound SR 51 to eastbound I-10.
• Jefferson Street to eastbound I-10.
• Eastbound I-10 HOV to eastbound Loop 202 Red Mountain Freeway.
• Eastbound I-10 on-ramps at Third and Seventh streets; Buckeye Road; and 24th, 32nd and 40th streets (starting at 8 p.m. Friday).
• Seventh Avenue and Seventh Street to southbound I-17 (starting at 8 p.m. Friday).
• McDowell Road to southbound SR 51 (starting at 8 p.m. Friday).

Weekend traffic can get from Phoenix to the East Valley by taking the eastbound Loop 202 Red Mountain Freeway to the southbound Loop 101 Price Freeway.

Once on the Loop 101, drivers can connect with I-10 beyond the Broadway Curve closure by heading west on either US 60 or the Loop 202 Santan Freeway.

Motorists starting in the West Valley can detour via the southbound/eastbound Loop 202 South Mountain Freeway, which reconnects with I-10 in the Chandler/Ahwatukee area.

In another restriction related to the Broadway Curve Improvement Project, the westbound I-10 off- and on-ramps at Broadway Road will closed from 8 p.m. Friday to 4 a.m. Monday, as will nearby sections of Broadway Road and 48th and 52nd streets.

Meanwhile, northbound I-17 will be closed in north Phoenix from Loop 303 to State Route 74/Carefree Highway from 10 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Monday for an ongoing improvement project.

In addition, traffic will not be allowed to travel under I-17 on eastbound Loop 303 and westbound Sonoran Desert Drive, although right turns to the southbound freeway will be permitted.

Drivers should use the I-17 frontage road to bypass the closure, even if a navigation app suggests other routes. That’s because the local streets in the area are not designed to handle a high traffic load.

The same area will be subject to weekend closures for the next month, ADOT previously announced.

East Valley and Scottsdale ramps closing for two months

To cap it all off, two longterm ramp closures are set to begin in other parts of the Valley before the Monday morning commute.

The westbound Loop 202 Santan Freeway on-ramp at Gilbert Road in the East Valley will shut down at 11:30 p.m. Sunday, followed by the northbound Loop 101 Pima Freeway on-ramp at Cactus Road in Scottsdale at 1 a.m. Monday.

Both ramps will be closed for about two months for widening projects.
