Glendale elementary school remains closed after fire in bathroom

PHOENIX – A West Valley school remains closed Thursday after a fire in a bathroom stall earlier in the week.

Horizon Elementary School in Glendale won’t reopen until air quality issues have been resolved, district officials said. Students have been reassigned temporarily to other learning facilities.

The Glendale Elementary School District said carbon dioxide levels were being tested at the K-8 campus near 43rd and Northern avenues.

“Once we receive an all-clear with the testing, we will return back to normal operations,” the district said a few hours after the Tuesday afternoon fire.

Students have been relocated to alternate learning sites until the K-8 school reopens, district administrators said Wednesday in a note to families.

Last names A through E will attend Bicentennial North at 7237 W. Missouri Ave.; last names F through O will attend the GESD System of Care Center at 7677 W. Bethany Home Road; and last names P through Z will attend Desert Garden at 7020 W. Ocotillo Road.

An administrator will be on-site at each location.

The fire was limited to a toilet, where tissue paper was set aflame, the Glendale Fire Department said.

“There was very little fire but lots of smoke thus the sprinkler system did not get triggered,” Capt. Ashley Losch said in an email.

Smoke filled the hallways and students and staff were evacuated.

No one was injured, the fire department said.
