PHOENIX — The Federal Highway Administration this week approved Arizona’s Electric Vehicle Infrastructure Deployment Plan, paving the way for the state to use funding to construct and upgrade stations.

The Arizona Department of Transportation will get $11.3 million immediately and another $16.3 million in October from the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act.

The plan aims to close gaps in the charging network throughout the five federal interstates throughout Arizona.

It also hopes to identify potential new station locations.

Most new stations will be built in areas where infrastructure, such as truck stops, lodging, restaurants and shopping centers, are available.

The plan calls for stations to be within 50 miles of each other whenever possible.

ADOT next has to give out contracts to upgrade stations and install new ones along designated alternative fuel corridors on the interstates.

Contract bidding for existing station upgrades will begin in spring 2023 and in fall 2023 for new stations.

Arizona will get a total of $76.5 million for the project over the next five years.

The plan will be updated again in August 2023.

Arizona was one of 34 states to have their plans approved this week.

We want to hear from you.
