Last feline of defense: Arizona Humane Society puts cats to work against rodents

PHOENIX —  Need some help against rodents? The Arizona Humane Society has some four-legged friends that could provide assistance.

The shelter’s Working Cats program has placed about 200 felines this year into roles where they control warehouse, ranch, mill or barn rodent and pest populations.

That includes Gravy, an injured stray rescued in January.

Gravy recovered from a paw injury and didn’t like the indoors, so AHS put him in the work program and he was adopted by Phoenix brewery Wren House Brewing.

The cats typically are adopted out in pairs, don’t have an adoption fee and are spayed/neutered. They are also vaccinated, ear-tipped and microchipped.

AHS will also loan acclimation crates and provide assistance in getting the cats adjusted to their new homes.

The cats can be delivered within 25 miles of AHS’ Sunnyslope campus, located at 9226 N. 13th Ave., Phoenix. Pickups can also be arranged.

The program is designed to help individuals or businesses with pests, but is also used to help homeless cats that may have no other adoption options.
