Drugs, guns found after Phoenix police find man passed out in running vehicle

PHOENIX – A Glendale man who’d been passed out in a running pickup truck in Phoenix earlier this month was arrested after guns and multiple illegal drugs were found in the vehicle, authorities said.

Donald Alan Garwood, 40, was booked into jail on five counts related to weapons and drugs on July 7, according to court documents.

Two Phoenix officers responded to a call about a person passed out in a running Chevrolet Silverado near 16th Street and Beardsley Road around 3:15 p.m.

The man, later identified as Garwood, was in the driver’s seat. He was slow to wake up and respond to commands to turn off the vehicle, according to the probable cause statement filed by police.

The officers called the fire department to medically evaluate Garwood after he got out of the truck. Other officers also arrived on the scene.

While fire department personnel were checking Garwood out, an officer saw a gun in the back seat of the truck, according to the probable cause statement.

Fire department responders looked in the truck to determine what kind of substance Garwood may have taken, according to the probable cause statement. They found a box containing blue pills that police identified as fentanyl and a bag containing what was believed to be methamphetamine.

After police placed Garwood under arrest, they found more drugs and multiple guns in the truck, according to the probable cause statement.

The Phoenix Police Department said the truck contained 949 fentanyl pills, 867.5 grams of methamphetamine, 70.5 grams of heroin, 42 Xanax bars and four guns.

Garwood has previous felony convictions, and police didn’t find any indication that his rights to possess firearms had been restored, according to the probable cause statement.

He was booked for prohibited weapon possession, possession of narcotic drugs for sale, possession of dangerous drugs for sale, possession of marijuana for sale and possession of a weapon during a drug offense.

A court commissioner set bail for Garwood at $10,000 in cash at his initial appearance on July 8.
