Salvation Army to activate indoor cooling, heat relief stations across Valley as temperatures soar

PHOENIX – An excessive heat warning in metro Phoenix set for Monday has prompted the Salvation Army to activate nearly a dozen relief stations.

With the National Weather Service forecasting temperatures as high as 114 degrees, the international charity’s emergency disaster services said indoor cooling and water will be available for those in need from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The 11 relief stations are mobilized anytime the weather service issues an excessive heat warning, with the exception of holidays.

The excessive warning will be in effect from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.

“Anyone can come into a Salvation Army location for indoor cooling and hydration during regular operating hours, but when the National Weather Service issues an excessive heat warning, the Salvation Army considers it a disaster situation,” Maj. Tim Smith, the Salvation Army divisional secretary for metro Phoenix, said in a website post.

The Salvation Army’s emergency disaster service is part of the Maricopa Association of Governments’ Heat Relief Regional Network, which provides resources to prevent heat-related illnesses and deaths among vulnerable populations.

In addition to the indoor centers, tented stations supplied with water will be set up in areas that have high populations of homeless.

Salvation Army officers and staff will also take water to those in need around their neighborhoods, Smith added.

​Most of the heat relief stations are dog-friendly, the organization said, “as long as safety is maintained.”
