PHOENIX — Video released Thursday by the Phoenix Police Department shows the moment an officer was shot by a suspect earlier this month, triggering a 3-day manhunt.

Body-cam footage (WARNING: Graphic content) shows 35-year-old Nicholas Cowan pulling up to a gas station in north Phoenix in a blue Prius, where officers were waiting with a woman who made a domestic violence call regarding Cowan.

The suspect rolled down the front passenger side window of the vehicle and fired a single shot at a female officer, striking her.

A shootout between Cowan and another officer on scene ensued. Cowan was struck by gunfire but was able to escape.

The April 14 shooting triggered a Blue Alert, the rarely used system that the Arizona Department of Public Safety can activate when a suspect who assaulted a law enforcement officer is on the loose.

Cowan was captured April 17 in Scottsdale, 80 hours after the incident.

Three people have been arrested for allegedly helping Cowan evade police while he was wanted in the shooting the officer.

The wounded officer is a 24-year veteran of the force. She underwent surgery after the shooting and as of Thursday was recovering in a rehabilitation center, police said.

Cowan is facing two counts of attempted first-degree murder, one count of aggravated assault, one count of drive-by shooting and one count of misconduct involving weapons.
