Hello, heat: Phoenix reaches 90 degrees for first time in 2022; daily heat record broken

PHOENIX — It was only a matter of time before the cool temperatures gave way to the heat.

Phoenix hit 90 degrees on Friday at about 1:20 p.m., the first time the mark has been reached in 2022, according to the National Weather Service.

About an hour later, a new daily heat record was reached when the mercury reached 94 degrees. Previously, the warmest March 25 in city history was in 1988 and 1990, when it was 93 degrees.

The recorded high on Friday was 96 degrees.

Last year, Phoenix got its first 90-degree day on April 1, the beginning of a stretch of 13 consecutive days with highs of at least that mark.

Temperatures are expected to jump to 96 degrees on Saturday before dropping to 92 degrees on Sunday and 84 degrees by Monday.

Previously, the warmest temperature recorded in Phoenix this year was 88 degrees on March 3.
