PHOENIX – While Republicans in the Arizona Legislature advance a bill that includes eliminating nearly all forms of early voting, a poll showed most voters in the state want the option to cast ballots by mail.

Phoenix-based OH Predictive Insights’ poll, released Tuesday, showed 74% favored mail-in voting, and 64% supported requiring more identification when voting by mail.

Only 10% opposed voting by mail.

Voting by mail is “incredibly popular with Arizona voters,” OH Predictive Insights chief pollster Mike Noble told KTAR News 92.3 FM.

Those in favor included Republicans, Democrats and independents, people who planned to vote by mail in the 2022 elections and people who have lived in the state at least five years.

“It looks like voters with longer Arizona tenure, who are a little more used to Arizona’s participation with mail-in voting, are on board with the election policy, those newer to the Grand Canyon State are more reluctant,” Noble said.

Of the voters most opposed to mailing in their ballots, 35% said they planned to drop off their ballot in person. On average, they have lived in Arizona less than five years.

A majority of poll participants also said they would back requirements that Arizona voters supply their date of birth along with one of the following: their driver’s license number; the last four digits of their Social Security Number; or voter ID number when turning in their ballot by mail.

“The personal information requirements did not deter most Arizona voters,” Noble said.

Voters opposed to more verification on mail-ins totaled 14%.

The online opt-in poll of 753 was taken March 7-15 and has a margin of error of 3.6%.
