Gilbert Town Council to vote on raising utility rates to ‘ensure continued quality’

PHOENIX – The Gilbert Town Council will be voting next week on whether to raise utility rates in the East Valley suburb.

According to an online bill calculator, the proposal would add about $10 per month for the typical single-family residence.

The actual price change would depend on usage and other factors. An online example shows a Gilbert household that currently pays $66.11 on utilities having to pay $76.27, an increase of 15%.

About $6 of the difference in the example comes from increases to the water meter base fee and volume charge, and the rest is for environmental services (solid waste and recycling).

A public hearing and vote are scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Gilbert Public Safety Training Facility’s Atlas Auditorium, 6860 S. Power Road.

The plan calls for the new rates to go into effect April 1.

“A recent study determined that rate increases are needed for the water and environmental services (solid waste and recycling) fees to maintain the utility operations and ensure continued quality services,” an online posting about the upcoming vote says.

Gilbert’s residential water and environmental services rates haven’t been changed since 2018, according to the post.

The town posted a notice of intent to increase rates in December and held several workshops about the proposal for residential and commercial customers.
