Tempe hosts Arizona’s largest blood drive during urgent time of need

PHOENIX– The Saving Arizona Blood Drive is on Jan. 2 at the Tempe Center for the Arts to help during the lowest 10 days of blood donations of the year.

New Year’s Day through Jan. 10 are the lowest donation days of the year, but the month of January requires more transfusions than any other month, according to the company.

Because of COVID-19 and closures of schools and businesses, thousands of blood drives have been canceled.

“The winter holiday season reduces the number of people giving blood, but heavy traffic on the roads and highways increases the potential for accidents and the need for blood,” said Sid Lewis, Sr. Director of Donor Recruitment for Vitalant’s Southwest Division in a press release.

Arizona has a big need especially for Type-O, the blood used in most emergencies. The drive will be from 7 a.m to 1 p.m.

The company is calling for 500 or more donors to replenish their supply after the holidays.
