Suspect in fatal Buckeye collision leaves, then returns for police questioning

PHOENIX – A driver suspected of hitting and killing a pedestrian on a Phoenix-area street late Tuesday left the scene but later returned to answer police questions, authorities said.

The Buckeye Police Department said in a press release Wednesday an officer was flagged down around 11 p.m. on Jackrabbit Trail near Van Buren Street by someone who found a body in the road.

Edgar Chamu Martinez, 28, had suffered “obvious signs of trauma consistent with being struck by a vehicle,” police said.

During the investigation, police said the alleged driver came back to the collision site to talk with them.

Toxicology results on the suspect were pending.

No other details were made available.
