Man standing near bus stop in Phoenix struck, killed by box truck driver

Police are investigating a fatal collision after a man standing near a bus stop in Phoenix was struck and killed by a box truck driver Saturday afternoon, authorities said.

PHOENIX — Police are investigating a fatal collision after a man standing near a bus stop in Phoenix was struck and killed by a box truck driver Saturday afternoon, authorities said.

Phoenix police responded to reports of a crash with injuries near Southern Avenue and 16th Street around 3:15 p.m. Saturday, according to a press release.

Officers learned a box truck pulling a car dolly was traveling southbound on 16th Street when it drove into oncoming traffic and onto the east sidewalk of 16th Street, striking a bus stop and a pedestrian.

Police have identified the pedestrian as 64-year-old Javier Saavedra. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The box truck driver identified as 24-year-old Brandon Seymour was evaluated for impairment and later booked into Fourth Avenue Jail.

The investigation remains ongoing.
