PHOENIX — Gas prices continue to rise in Arizona and likely won’t slow down with the holiday season approaching, according to an oil industry expert.

The statewide average as of Tuesday was $3.62 a gallon, up 12 cents from a week ago and $1.40 more than a year ago, GasBuddy’s Patrick De Haan said.

Arizona’s price hikes have outpaced the national increase of 3 cents in the past week and $3.43 overall, a seven-year high, De Haan added.

“Motorists can expect gas prices to stay high into the holidays as the global balance between oil supply and demand continues and could widen even further, driving prices higher,” De Haan told KTAR News 92.3 FM.

De Haan said drivers nationally are collectively spending $600 million more on gas per day than last year.

Arizona drivers, despite the increase, aren’t seeing the highest gas prices in the nation.

Nationwide, the highest average price for regular-grade gas is in the San Francisco Bay Area, at $4.77 per gallon. The lowest average is in Houston, at $2.98 per gallon.
