PHOENIX — Valley freeways will be free of closures this Memorial Day weekend.

The Arizona Department of Transportation announced Tuesday no full construction or maintenance closures would occur along state highways from Friday afternoon through Monday night to limit impacts on holiday weekend travel.

Drivers are still advised to allow for extra travel time, especially during peak periods, and be prepared for unscheduled highway closures or delays due to crashes, disabled vehicles or other incidents such as wildfires.

Even though no closures are scheduled, drivers should expect to slow down and merge safely when approaching and traveling through existing work zones.

ADOT also advises drivers to be prepared for changing weather conditions, including blowing dust, and make sure to pack extra drinking water and other items including blankets, a first aid kit, flashlight, extra batteries, a fully charged cell phone and charger, healthy snacks, baby diapers if necessary and a small tool kit in case of possible travel delays.

Other holiday weekend safe driving recommendations include never driving while impaired, wearing a seatbelt, minding the speed limit, getting enough rest before traveling and checking your vehicle before travel.

Drivers are also asked not to park in areas with grasses and brush as vehicle components could start a fire.

ADOT provides real-time highway conditions online, on Twitter or over the phone at 511.

Drivers can also get alerts and alternate route notifications via ADOT’s mobile app.
