Former officer at Phoenix prison sentenced for sexually abusing inmate

PHOENIX – A former federal prison officer who pleaded guilty to sexually abusing an inmate in Phoenix was sentenced Thursday to eight months behind bars, authorities said.

Irv Anglin of Tempe engaged in sexual contact with an inmate he supervised at a Federal Bureau of Prisons facility in Phoenix between Jan. 1 and Nov. 30 of 2019, according to a Department of Justice press release.

After his release, the 29-year-old Anglin will have to register as a sex offender and undergo 10 years of supervision, per U.S. District Judge John J. Tuchi’s sentencing.

“This officer abused his position of authority by harming an inmate and betrayed the trust of the federal government,” Sean Kaul, special agent in charge of the FBI Phoenix Field Office, said in the release.

“Instead of providing safe imprisonment, Anglin violated his oath and the rights of this individual.”

Thursday’s sentencing came after Anglin previously pleaded guilty to abusive sexual contact of a ward.
