Fire crews continue to battle multiple wildfires across Arizona

PHOENIX – Fire officials have fully contained some of the largest blazes burning in Arizona while gaining more control over smaller fires this week.

The Meddler Fire, which burned 4,452 acres northeast of Roosevelt, was fully contained on Thursday.

One of the state’s largest blaze in recent months, the Griffin Fire, reached 100% containment on Wednesday. The fire burned 61,821 acres east of metro Phoenix.

The Rockhouse Fire consumed 19,506 acres southeast of San Carlos and remained at 37% containment as of Friday.

The Superstition Fire, the closest active fire to the metro Phoenix area, has consumed 9,539 acres and was 95% contained as of Friday.

There was no growth on the Hidden Fire, which has burned 6,065 acres and is 55% contained. More than 220 personnel are working to contain the lightning-caused fire.

The Alder Fire was 0% contained and has burned 633 acres. The lightning-sparked blaze started Aug. 27.

The lightning-caused Lofer Fire is burning 15 miles east of Whiteriver and has consumed 906 acres and was 10% contained.

The Medicine Fire increased to 96% containment as of Thursday after scorching 8,930 acres north of Globe.

Stage 1 and 2 fire restrictions remain in effect for portions of the state like the Tonto National Forest ahead of Labor Day weekend.

Over 800,000 acres have been destroyed by wildfires in Arizona this year. Wildfire activity usually burns out by July because of seasonal monsoon rainfall, but those storms have largely failed to materialize.
