Severe thunderstorm warnings issued as storm moves across Valley

PHOENIX — The National Weather Service issued a severe thunderstorm warning Monday night for Phoenix and the surrounding areas.

Around 7:30 p.m., Phoenix was included in the cluster of thunderstorm warnings issued over the course of the evening. Other affected areas included Mesa, Chandler, Tempe Scottsdale and Gilbert as the storm had centered over the East Valley before proceeding west.

Gusts of winds had reached more than 50 mph and blowing dust had reduced visibility along Interstates 10 and 8., according to the National Weather Service.

The warning for the Phoenix area was set to expire at 8:45 p.m.

Severe thunderstorm warnings set to expire at 8:30 p.m. had also been in effect for Maricopa, Sun Lakes and Casa Blanca.

Around 8:10 p.m., a significant weather advisory had been issued for Maricopa County until 9:15 p.m.

At 7:33 p.m., a dust advisory encompassing areas west and northwest of Phoenix was scheduled to expire at 8:30 p.m.

Earlier on Monday, Phoenix set a daily heat record for a second consecutive day, hitting 115 degrees at about 3:45 p.m.

It broke the previous daily record of 114 degrees set in 2013, according to the National Weather Service.
