Mesa officer injured in collision on US 60 remains in critical condition

PHOENIX — A Mesa police officer who was injured in a collision on U.S. 60 Tuesday remains in critical condition, authorities said.

Sean Stoddard, a 13-year veteran of the force, suffered injuries after an SUV slammed into his vehicle from behind after he had stopped to remove a ladder from the center lane of eastbound U.S. 60 near Greenfield Road.

“We are hopeful he will continue to make positive strides toward recovery as he is attended to by family, friends and the best medical professionals,” Mesa police said in a statement.

“We are grateful for our community’s support at this time and we wish Sean a speedy recovery.”

Rescuers had to cut the door off the police vehicle to get Stoddard out before taking him to a hospital.

Sgt. Kameron Lee of the Arizona Department of Public Safety told KTAR News 92.3 FM Tuesday “the prognosis looks good” that Stoddard will survive, but “anything can happen.”

The woman driving the SUV was hospitalized with serious but not life-threatening injuries, Lee said.

DPS is handling the investigation into the incident.
