PHOENIX — Arizona Gov. Doug Ducey said on Thursday he believes his office and public health officials have chosen the best course of action in handling the coronavirus outbreak.

State policies have been primarily guided by protecting those in long-term care facilities, limiting the spread of COVID-19 and protecting the maximum number of lives, Ducey said during a press conference.

“I am confident that we have made the best and most responsible decisions possible,” Ducey said.

“We will continue to work to make sure that we can care and comfort and help anyone that is severely ill recover.”

Ducey’s statements followed a recent increase in confirmed coronavirus cases throughout the state.

Thursday morning, the Arizona Department of Health Services reported an additional 530 coronavirus cases and 15 deaths.

A new daily high of more than 1,100 COVID cases were reported by AZDHS on Tuesday followed by 973 on Wednesday.

“The fact that we were going to focus on having more tests meant that we were going to have more cases,” Ducey said. “We anticipated that.”

On Saturday, Arizona concluded its fifth and final “Arizona Testing Blitz” weekend.

The program was announced April 27 and set a goal of testing 10,000-20,000 Arizonans for COVID-19.

“We mourn every death in the state of Arizona,” Ducey said. “This virus is not going away.”

We want to hear from you.
