PHOENIX — The Arizona Department of Insurance is encouraging insurers across the state to work with people and businesses facing financial challenges due to the coronavirus outbreak.

The letter from Christina Corieri, interim director of the department, sent the request to all types of insurance providers including life, health, car, property and casualty.

“We have called on insurers across the state to work with consumers during this health emergency to make sure Arizonans do not lose the coverage they depend on,” Gov. Doug Ducey said in the release.

Corieri in the letter aks insurers to refrain from canceling policies during the outbreak, delay premium increases, waive late fees, interest and penalties, among other options.

The release noted many insurers are already offering relief options for customers, such as waiving health insurance cost-share for coronavirus treatment.

People are urged to connect with their provider to find out all the resources possible.

“My thanks to the insurers already working with their customers in good faith to provide relief for people who need it,” Ducey said.

Along with the health toll on the state, Arizona passed 4,500 positive coronavirus cases with 169 deaths as of the report on Friday, the job market has been hit hard by the outbreak.

Arizonans made nearly 260,000 initial and continuing unemployment claims in the week that ended April 11, according to the state’s Department of Economic Security, compared to just over 21,000 for the week ending March 14.
