Body found in debris after fire in Phoenix alley extinguished

PHOENIX – Phoenix police opened a homicide investigation after a body was found in the debris of an extinguished alley fire early Wednesday, authorities said.

Crews responded to a call about a fire in an alley near 27th Avenue and Thomas Road around 2:30 a.m., according to the Phoenix Fire Department.

They quickly put the blaze out before locating a body in the debris.

Police detectives and fire investigators were called to the scene.

The investigation is ongoing, and the medical examiner’s office will determine the cause of death, police said.

No other information was immediately available.
