Ironman Arizona brings road closures, bus detours to Tempe this weekend

PHOENIX — If you’re planning on traveling in Tempe this weekend, be prepared for road closures, restrictions and bus detours.

Although Ironman Arizona will be taking place on Sunday, several streets will either be closed or restricted from Thursday to Monday.

The event kicks off at 6:40 a.m. with a single-lap swim around Tempe Town Lake.

Athletes will follow the 2.4-mile swim with a 112-mile bike race that goes all the way out to the Beeline Highway with a 10-mile incline before making a U-turn prior to Shea Boulevard.

The final stretch of the race consists of a 26.2-mile marathon around the lake and through Papago Park.

Rio Salado Parkway will be closed in both directions between Ash and Mill avenues from 6 a.m. Thursday to 12 p.m. Monday.

Ash Avenue and Rio Salado Parkway will also be closed in both directions between Hardy Drive and the US Airways garage just north of Third Street from 7 a.m. Thursday to 12 p.m. Sunday.

First Street will be closed between Farmer Avenue and Rio Salado Parkway on Sunday as well.

Orbit Earth will also not be in service for Tempe Transportation Center or Tempe Marketplace.
