Mesa’s Pioneer Park, 5 others named to Great Public Spaces list

PHOENIX — The American Planning Association has named an East Valley park one of this year’s six Great Public Spaces.
Mesa’s Pioneer Park, near Mesa Drive and Main Street, features a 15-foot water wall and splash pad, a 9,000-square-foot playground with multiple slides, a historic train engine and a food truck area.
“So many Mesa families have been coming to Pioneer Park for generations,” Mayor John Giles said in a press release.
“From the days of playing on the historic train engine to the amazing new playground structures that look and feel like playing in the trees, Pioneer Park is the place our community gathers.”

The park was revamped in 2018 after it had fallen into a “period of disuse and decay,” according to the release.
The city will celebrate the recognition Oct. 12 at 8 a.m. during the Mesa Farmers Market at the park.
The American Planning Association started naming Great Public Spaces in 2007 and has since recognized more than 300 locations.
The other places recognized on this year’s list were Neponset River Greenway in Boston; Mohawk Valley Gateway Overlook in Amsterdam, New York; Governors Island in New York City; Gathering Place in Tulsa, Oklahoma; and Discovery Green in Houston.
