PHOENIX – Police in west Phoenix fatally shot a man Monday after he allegedly attacked his mother with a knife, authorities said Tuesday.

The victim escaped her son’s attack and fled to a neighbor’s house near Thunderbird Road and 43rd Avenue, according to a police press release.

One resident drove the victim to a hospital before police arrived. Another resident called police around 4:30 p.m. and told responding officers what happened.

The witness said the suspect, 47-year-old Hector Miranda Jr., stabbed his mother and was armed.

While officers talked to the witness, Miranda walked onto the street carrying a knife and a handgun, police said.

He told officers he planned to make them shoot him and ignored commands to drop the weapons, according to police.

Miranda moved toward one officer while pointing the gun, police said. One officer shot Miranda, but he continued pointing the gun until another officer shot him.

Miranda was transported to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Police said they recovered a knife and a replica handgun.

No officers were injured, and the victim was treated for a deep laceration to her head and released from the hospital Monday night.

Both officers who fired their weapons are 22-year-old males. They were later identified as Ridel Daudinot, who has been on the force for one year, and Joshua Freer, who has been on the force for 1½ years.

The police press release said they both had body-worn cameras that were operational.

No other details were made available.

It was the 12th shooting involving a Phoenix officer in 2019.
