2019 Arizona State Fair gets first shot of rock with The Cult

PHOENIX – Reports of rock’s death at the Arizona State Fair are premature.

It took a week of announcements, but the fair on Tuesday heralded the arrival of the first rock act in its 2019 concert series: The Cult.

The British band rose to prominence in the 1980s behind early alternative hits such as “She Sells Sanctuary,” “Love Removal Machine” and “Fire Woman.”

The Cult will take the Veterans Memorial Coliseum stage on Oct. 5 as part of a 30th anniversary tour for its “Sonic Temple” album.

That will be opening weekend of this year’s fair, which will run Oct. 4-27 on Wednesdays through Sundays at the fairgrounds at McDowell Road and 19th Avenue.

The other acts added in recent days are Latin pop singer Becky G (Oct. 18), the first female performer to be announced, and the Christian rock/pop pairing of Matthew West and Zach Williams (Oct. 16).

Concert admission is free with fair admission, but prime reserved seats will be available for a fee starting July 12.
