US News ranks Phoenix Children’s as top pediatric hospital in all 10 areas

PHOENIX – Once again, Phoenix Children’s Hospital is all over U.S. News & World Report’s annual rankings of best children’s hospitals.

PCH was cited as a top-50 pediatric facility in all 10 medical specialties of the website’s 2019-20 rankings, which were released Tuesday.

The medical center at State Route 51 and Thomas Road was one of just 24 children’s hospitals in the nation to be ranked in every category this year, and it was the third time PCH went 10 for 10.

“These rankings help guide patient families to make the best medical care decisions,” Robert L. Meyer, PCH president and CEO, said in a press release.

“Staff at Phoenix Children’s hold themselves accountable to every patient we serve. As part of this, we report clinical data to U.S. News as well as other public databases that evaluate our outcomes and quality on a high standard among our peers nationwide.”

The prestigious rankings were based on survey data collected from around 200 hospitals and 15,000 pediatric specialists. The results depended on how the facilities fared in each specialty in three major areas: clinical outcomes, efficient coordination of care and care-related resources.

PCH’s highest rating, No. 14, came in cardiology and heart surgery. The hospital’s work in that specialty will get a boost Thursday when Thunderbirds Charities makes a $400,000 donation toward expanding the cardiovascular intensive care unit.

The donation from the charity group that raises funds through the Waste Management Phoenix Open will allow the unit to double in size.

PCH’s other rankings were as follows: No. 27 in neonatology; No. 32 in gastroenterology and GI surgery; No. 32 in nephrology; No. 35 in cancer; No. 38 in neurology and neurosurgery; No. 39 in orthopedics; No. 40 in pulmonology and lung surgery; No. 41 in urology; and No. 50 in diabetes and endocrinology.

This the 13th year for U.S. News’ rankings of children’s hospitals. In all, 84 facilities were ranked in at least one area.

PCH was the lone Arizona facility ranked in any specialty.
