PHOENIX – After receiving more than 3,200 entries, the Arizona Department of Transportation has selected 15 finalists for its annual safety message contest.

People can vote online for their favorite message until May 20. The top two vote-getters will see their message in lights on overhead signs throughout the state.

“One of the interesting things about the contest is seeing the messages submitted and what really matters to people when it comes to transportation safety,” ADOT Director John Halikowski said in a press release.

“People are fed up with drivers that choose to speed, drive distracted or drunk, and want to see more courtesy on the roads.”

Entries had to be related to traffic safety, fit into three lines and be no more than 18 characters per line.

The finalists are:

    • Drive like the / person your dog / thinks you are
    • Do a good deed / don’t speed
    • Driving distracted / may get you / extracted
    • Not all heroes / wear capes / drive safely
    • Drive like / your mom / is a passenger
  • Tickets are coming / quit / texting & driving
  • Leave sooner / drive slower / live longer
  • Drink & drive? / Meet the police / & see new bars
  • Only cars / should be ‘tired’ / on the road
  • Don’t hit the gas / let ‘em pass
  • Good driving / is no accident
  • Show some class / use the / left lane to pass
  • Slow down / be excellent / to each other
  • Hands on the wheel / or things will / get real
  • Inflate your tires / they won’t / let you down

Last year’s winning message was “Buckle up, buttercup.”

There was a tie for runner-up between “Road rage gives you wrinkles” and “Camping in the left lane attracts bears.”
