PHOENIX — Billionaire Elon Musk’s SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket lifted off in California, but plenty of skywatchers in Arizona saw the fireworks, too, on its way back to Earth.

The rocket launched Sunday around 7:20 p.m. from Vandenberg Air Force Base in Santa Barbara County, taking Argentine satellite SAOCOM 1A into the sky. The rocket’s reusable first stage landed back at the base without a problem in less than 10 minutes, a first.

Previous tests sent the first stage to offshore barges, not back to launch site.

In metro Phoenix, witnesses hit up social media with photos and videos of the peculiar streak of light and ghostlike images they saw.
